News from the Dja Reserve

When local people are dependent on hunting wild animals not only for a source of income, but also as a basic necessity for survival, it makes it significantly more challenging for the people to change their behaviour to sustainable practices.

But we know what we have to do: the local people have told us that they want to change the way they live, so we're looking to provide and train in fish farming, to supply alternative sources of animal protein to that obtained by hunting in the forests for bushmeat, such as this moustached guenon.

Being able to buy food rather than hunting for it is also attractive to the villagers. We're therefore looking to train them in cocoa farming, which will provide much needed cash to the local people.
